As a clockmaker was building a new clock, the pendulum became worried and
began calculating how long it would be before the gears of the clock were
worn out and its usefulness would come to an end. The pendulum would be
expected to swing back and forth 60 times a minute, 60 minutes an hour,
24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The numbers seemed overwhelming. “I just
can’t do it,” the pendulum sighed. “Of course you can,” encouraged the
clockmaker. “You don’t have to do it all at once, just one-tick-at-a-time.”
The same holds true for the new year. Don’t worry about how you will make
it through. Just live one-moment-at-a-time and trust the Lord to give you
grace for all your tomorrows.
