On April 26, 1717, a treasure-filled pirate ship named the Whydah Galley sailed directly into the path of a nor'easter off the coast of Cape Cod. Strong winds ran the ship onto a sandbar and broke it apart, spilling her precious cargo beneath the waves. Gone was this earthly treasure along with the lives of all but two of the 146 men aboard.
Such are the treasures of this world. One enjoys them for a season and then through death or calamity they are gone. Therefore, "lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven... (Matt. 6:19,20). "A treasure... that faileth not..." (Luke 12:33).
