 Crude oil is refined by heating it in a furnace where it is vaporized up through a tower designed to separate its various parts into useful products such as heating oil, kerosene, and gasoline. The higher the desired quality and grade of the product, the more the oil is heated and refined.
Likewise, God applies the same principle to developing quality in the character of His saints. The greater His plans are for us, the more time He will spend heating and refining us in the furnace of affliction.
Therefore, "rejoice, though now... ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations..." (1 Peter 1:6) because "our...affliction... worketh for us...eternal glory..." (2 Cor. 4:17) "...that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God" (Col. 4:12).
