 In 1837, while laboring as a blacksmith, John Deere (1804-1886) developed a self-cleaning plow which solved the problem that earlier cast-iron plows had of cleaving to the soil through which they passed. Using a high grade of polished steel, Deere developed a plow that passed through the earth without any soil cleaving to it. His invention helped farmers plant their crops faster, since they no longer had to make frequent stops to clean their plows.
Just as the Deere plow passed through the earth without cleaving to it, we also must pass through this world without cleaving to it.
The best thing in life is not a thing -- it’s Jesus. Therefore, “cleave unto the Lord” (Acts 11:23) and not things, “for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth" (Luke 12:15).
