 Buried deep inside the housing of a gasoline combustion engine is what is called a "lifter". Lifters are critical to an engine's operation, for without them the intake and exhaust valves would be unable to open and close. In order for an engine to generate power, there must be a compressed mixture of fuel and air in each cylinder. The lifting of the valves makes this possible. Thus without the lifters, the engine is powerless.
Psalm 3:3 says, "Thou, O Lord, art... the lifter..." Just as the lifters in a combustion engine give the valves a lift, the Lord Jesus Christ is our "Lifter". He gives us a lift when we need it. Without Jesus we, like a combustion engine without its lifters, are powerless.
