In 1787 the French chemist Marcelin Berthollet (1827-1907) discovered sodium hypochlorite -- a substance used in bleach for whitening and purification purposes. Half a world away on the east side of the San Francisco Bay, in 1913, a factory was built to manufacture this bleachy ingredient from the brine found in the bay's many salt ponds. Today, that company is known as The Clorox Company.
Just as bleach whitens and purifies, the blood of Jesus also whitens and purifies a person's sin-stained heart. "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isa. 1:18).
Therefore, "be thou clean" (Matt. 8:3). "Put away the evil of your doings" (Isa. 1:16) and "wash thine heart..." (Jer. 4:14) in "the blood of Jesus... (which) cleanseth... from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
