 Benedict Arnold (1741-1801), a once trusted and respected American general of the Revolutionary War, is remembered in history as a villainous traitor. Forgotten are his many victories and battle wounds for his country. Disappointment over not being properly honored for his many accomplishments, Arnold felt his country was ungrateful. Thus, in 1780 he began collaborating with the enemy to surrender the American fort at West Point to the British. When his treasonous plan was discovered, he fled and joined the British army as a brigadier general.
Benedict Arnold started out right with the American army, but he lost his way and finished in disgrace. In like manner, spiritually speaking, it is not enough to simply start on the right path that leads to Christ and eternal life. We must stay on that path. Any and all detours will lead to disgrace and spiritual death.
