Built in 1883 near Pen-Mar, PA atop the Blue Ridge Mountains, the luxurious Blue Mountain House Hotel was built in a record 76 days. In addition to its lavish 300 rooms, the hotel had a dining room that could seat 500 at one time. It boasted its own power plant, post office, elevators, and room phones. During its brief 30 year history, U.S. presidents and European royalty stayed there. The splendor ended suddenly, at 5:50 a.m. August 5, 1913, when fire engulfed the famous hotel. In just a few hours, the structure was completely gone except for its masonry chimneys.
Like the Blue Mountain House, this world with all its splendor and treasure will one day be burned up. Therefore, "lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth... but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven..." (Mt 6:19). "For... in heaven (we have) a better and an enduring substance" (Heb 10:34).
