During the American Civil War (1861-1865), the Confederacy purchased eleven warships from Britain to be used for raiding Union commerce ships. The last of these ships was the C.S.S. Shenandoah. Purchased in early 1865 and placed under the command of Lieutenant J.I. Waddell, the Shenandoah set sail for the Bearing Sea in February 1865. There, its crew waged war against a fleet of unarmed whaling ships until August 1865. Unknown to Waddell, the Confederacy had already surrendered in April 1865. For four months he had been fighting a lost war.
Like Waddell fighting a lost war, satan is also fighting a lost war against Christ and His saints. Revelation 20:10 describes satan's final judgement stating "the devil was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone... for ever and ever." Therefore, "fear not neither be discouraged" (Deu 1:21) when "the devil as a roaring lion" (1Pe 5:8) comes to devour you. Victory is already yours, for "God... always causeth us to triumph in Christ" (2Co 2:14).
