On August 2, 1876, James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok (1837-1876) was playing poker at a saloon in the Black Hills of the Dakotas. As He played, a man by the name of "Crooked Nose" Jack McCall shot him in the back of the head. Like butter in a hot skillet, Hickok slid to the floor and died with his cards still in his hand. It is believed the cards he held were two black aces and two black eights. Thus this combination of cards has come to be called "the dead man's hand."
Just as Hickok had no idea he was playing his last hand, rarely does one know when they are playing their last hand in the game of life. You could be holding "a dead man's hand" at this very moment. Therefore, if you haven't done so, "prepare to meet... (Jehovah) God.." (Amos 4:12). "Repent (of your sins), and be baptized... in the name of Jesus Christ..." (Acts 2:38).
