Our skin is the largest organ of our body. It is made up of 3 layers, the top of which is called the epidermis. At the base of the epidermis, new skin cells are constantly being formed. Once formed, these new cells begin a 2 to 4 week journey to the outer surface of the skin. As newer cells move up, older cells at the top die. What we see on our body is really dead skin cells which stick around for a little while and then flake off. Although we cannot see it happening, we lose about 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells each minute. That amounts to about 9 pounds of dead skin each year.
One day it won't be just our skin cells that will die. Hebrews 9:27 says that "it is appointed unto men once to die." Our entire body has an appointment with death. Until that time, a portion of us dies daily. Thus it behooves us to "be born again... of the Spirit" (Jn 3:7,8) and "be... followers of God" (Eph 5:1). In so doing, we "lay hold on eternal life" (1Ti 6:19) and shall live forever.
