Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) became the first black major league baseball player when he put on uniform number 42 for the Brooklyn Dodgers, in April 1947. In an interview with Dodger's president, Branch Rickey (1881-1965), Rickey shared with Jackie how he would have to learn to disregard racial insults made by rude spectators. In despair Jackie cried, "Do you want a ballplayer who's afraid to fight back?" "On the contrary," said Rickey. "I want a player with guts enough not to fight back." Jackie replied. I get it. What you want me to say is that I've got another cheek."
As Robinson learned to turn the other cheek in the game of baseball, let the children of Jehovah God do so in the game of life. "If it be possible... (let us) live peaceably with all men" (Rm 12:18). For "blessed are the peacemakers..." (Mt 5:9).
