On December 16, 1944, the German army launched a surprise attack against the U.S. and British armies known as the Battle of the Bulge. In an attempt to retain control of a vital intersection of roads located in Bastogne, Belgium, the American 101st Airborne Division entrenched themselves within the town. The Germans responded by surrounding and laying siege to Bastogne. On December 22, they demanded the American's surrender. The American commander, General Anthony McAuliffe (1898-1975) replied, "Aw, nuts!" and refused to give up. Things looked very bad for the Americans, but they kept on fighting. Four days latter, reinforcements arrived and victory was at hand.
No matter how bad things look, it's always too soon to quit. Like General McAuliffe, let us "hold fast" (Heb 4:14). "Fear not... for... God... will not fail thee, nor forsake thee" (Deu 31:6). He has promised "call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee" (Ps 50:15).
