Natural rubber comes from a milky fluid called "latex" which is extracted mostly from the Brazilian rubber-tree Hevea Brasiliensis. In its natural state, it is of little use because cold temperatures make it brittle and heat makes it sticky. In 1839, Charles Goodyear (1800-1860) discovered that by heating the milky latex with sulfur, under pressure, the rubber became stronger making it fit for useful purposes. Goodyear's process became known as "vulcanization."
Like the best unvulcanized rubber, "every man at his best state is altogether vanity" (Ps 39:5). Thus we being vain are useless to God. In order to be "fit for the kingdom of God" (Lk 9:62) we, like rubber, also need to be "tried with fire" (1Pe 1:7). Therefore "think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is (come) to try you..." (1Pe 4:12). For blessed is the man that endureth... when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life” (Jas 1:12).
