 During the 1970's, weightlifter Vasily Ivanovich Alekseyev (1942-2011) of the U.S.S.R. was declared to be the "World's Strongest Man." He was the first ever to lift more than 500 pounds in the clean and jerk. Between 1970 and 1977, he set 80 world records and won gold in both the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. During the 1980 Olympics, he walked onto the stage as his fellow countrymen cheered, "We are with you." But after failing to lift 397 pounds in three attempts, due to a hip injury sustained in 1978, he was booed off the stage and forsaken by the very people who had moments earlier cheered him on.
Like Alekseyev's fickle fans, people may forsake and disappoint you; but Jesus Christ "will never... forsake thee" (Heb 13:5). He has promised "I am with you always" (Mt 28:20). You can "trust in Him at all times" (Ps 62:8) for He is "a friend that sticketh closer than a brother" (Pr 18:24).
