Often called "The Father of the American Navy," John Paul Jones (1747-1792) won one of the greatest naval victories of the American Revolution on September 23, 1779. While commanding the Bonhomme Richard, he attacked the larger and better armed British warship, Serapis. When at first it appeared Jones was losing the conflict, the British captain ask if he wanted to surrender. Jones replied, "I have not yet begun to fight." Several hours later, after much fighting, the odds changed and Jones won the battle.
As Jones discovered, it is always too soon to quit. Let us also be like-minded and "fight the good fight of faith" (1Ti 6:12). "Stand fast" (1Co 16:13) and "be not weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not" (Gal 6:9). "In all... things we are... conquerors" (Rm 8:37) with "God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1Co 15:57).
