In 1951, Mickey Mantle (1931-1995) joined the New York Yankees baseball team. Shortly thereafter, he succumbed to the pressure of playing in the big league and went into a slump. He was sent down to the minor league to get his confidence back. Feeling like a failure, he told his father that he didn't think he had what it took to play major league baseball. His father replied, "You ain't nothing but a quitter." Those words made him feel ashamed and motivated him to try again. That afternoon he went out to the ballpark and hit two home runs. Soon he was back playing in the major league where he played for the next 17 years. Located in the Yankee Stadium's Monument Park is a plaque stating he was "a magnificent Yankee who left a legacy of unequaled courage."
If you, like Mickey, have ever felt like a failure and wanted to quit, "be… of... good courage... for the Lord... is with thee" (Josh 1:9). He has promised, "I will help thee" (Isa 41:10) and "deliver thee" (Ps 50:15). Therefore "fear not" (Isa 41:13) for "thou shalt have good success" (Josh 1:8) if you "commit thy way unto the Lord and trust… in Him" (Ps 37:5).
