During the Napoleonic Wars, the French waged war against Portugal, Spain and Great Britain for control of the Iberian Peninsula. The contest became known as the Peninsular War. On May 16, 1811, the British engaged the French on Spanish soil at the Battle of Albuera. Early in the skirmish, Colonel William Inglis (1764-1835) of the British 57th Regiment of Foot was wounded by French artillery. Refusing to be carried off the battlefield, Inglis lay by the flag and repeatedly encouraged his men to, "Stand your ground and die hard." As a result of their determination to stand fast, the British 57th Regiment won the victory over their adversary the French who sought to devour them. Their victory earned them the nickname "The Die Hards."
Likewise when your "adversary, the devil seeks to devour you" (1Pe 5:8 Paraphrased), be like the British and "stand fast" (Philip 4:1). "Resist the devil" (Jam 4:7) and fight back with the word of God. As Winston Churchill once said, "Never give in. Never, never, never, never..."
