In 1823 Hugh Glass (1783-1833) hired on as a scout for a fur trading expedition in the northern Missouri River area. As the band of trappers passed through present-day Lemmon, South Dakota, Hugh was attacked and badly mauled by a grizzly bear. All of his companions thought he was a goner. As the group of trappers moved on, two volunteers offered to stay behind for extra pay and bury him when he died. Several days later, Hugh was still alive. Fearing an Indian attack and figuring he couldn't live much longer, Hugh's two companions took his weapons and abandoned him to die all alone. Driven by the will to survive, Hugh regained enough strength to travel. Nearly two months later, he completed the strenuous 250 mile journey to Fort Kiowa where he was able to fully recuperate.
Unlike Hugh Glass's companions, Jesus will never abandon you. He has promised, "I am with you, and will keep you in all places whither thou goest" (Gen 28:15). "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Heb 13:5). "I am with you always, even unto the end of the world" (Mt 28:20).
