Going Up

The Lord... shall lift you up.
(James 4:10)

Elevator     For many years primitive elevators were used for lifting freight, but they were extremely unsafe. Should their lifting cable break, everything came crashing down. It wasn't until Elisha Otis (1811-1861) invented the safety elevator in 1853 that elevators became reliable enough to be used in tall buildings for lifting people. In the event that the lifting cable on an Otis elevator were to break, a safety mechanism consisting of a spring loaded set of jaws snaped open and engaged saw-toothed ratchet bars on each side of the elevator shaft. This apparatus stopped the elevator car and prevented it from plunging downwards. The Otis elevator worked so well that in 1913 one was installed in the newly built 60 story Woolworth Building in New York City. At that time, it was the tallest building in the world.
Just as elevators lift people to higher heights, Jehovah God is also in the lifting business. "He… lifteth up the needy"
(Ps 113:7) and "doeth great things… to set up on high those that be low" (Job 5:9,11).
