Frances Marion (1732-1795) was a clever military officer in the South Carolina Militia during the American Revolutionary War. In August of 1780, he waged guerrilla warfare against the British. Later that year, British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton was sent to capture Marion and his militia. After unsuccessfully chasing them for 26 miles though the South Carolina swamps, Tarleton gave up the hunt declaring, "as for that old fox, the devil himself couldn't catch him." The story of Marion's escape from the British, by taking refuge in the swamps, spread like wildfire. Soon thereafter, he became famously known as the "Swamp Fox."
Just as the swamps of South Carolina provided Frances Marion and his men with a place of refuge, "the Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed… in times of trouble" (Ps 9:9). He will "help… and deliver them... because they trust in Him" (Ps 37:40). Therefore "trust in the Lord (Ps 37:3) "at all times" (Ps 62:8). For "blessed are all they that put their trust in Him" (Ps 2:12).
