The Erie Canal is a 363 mile long waterway connecting Lake Erie with the Hudson River. President Thomas Jefferson called the project "a little short of madness." Many doubters agreed with Jefferson, believing it to be an impossibility. Contrary to the naysayers, a New York politician named DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828) believed otherwise. Through much perseverance, he persuaded New York lawmakers to fund the canal's construction, which began in 1817. Five years later, many began to doubt if the canal would ever be completed. Mockingly they called it "Clinton's Folly." Public opinion turned against Clinton, but he stood fast and never doubted the canal's reality. His unwavering faith was rewarded upon the canal's completion, in 1825.
Just as DeWitt Clinton's faith enabled him to do the impossible, you also can do the impossible "if you have faith, and doubt not" (Mt 21:21). Therefore be like Clinton, "hold fast" (Heb 3:6) and "be not weary in well doing, for in due season you shall reap, if you faint not" (Gal 6:9).
